May
Summer heat and high humidity may bring about decreased feed intake by livestock. this is not necessarily cause for alarm unless it continues to the point of changes in condition and weight loss. Normally a feed/ diet change is not needed. However, if an animal's body condition begins to change one must address the feeding program. you should switch to a "lighter" roughage and lower energy feed to get feed intake back to normal volume. Alfalfa hay should not be the roughage of choice during hot, humid weather. And a lower caloric feed can be used to increase feed intake. This is the time to provide both plain and trace mineral salt blocks to your pastures and corrals. Be sure to keep the water fresh and plentiful for all livestock.
April
Warm weather beginning in Texas in mid- April requires that a review of livestock rations is in order. Cold temperature daily feed intake will begin to reduce as will an animal's nutrient requirements. Heat and humidity makes animals reduce feed intake and causes them to desire more water. Humidity is also responsible for a reduction in feed efficiency. this may show up as a loss of weight for some classes of livestock. Be aware of your animal's body condition daily. As important as anything is a fresh clean water sourrce that is monitored daily.
FEBRUARY
Feed prices are advancing this winter to record levels. This is reflected not only in grains and by-product feedstuffs. The feed additive markets are following the trend.
This can lead some to try to fight feed costs by "cheating" the product quality they purchase. This is a critical time of the year for nutrient requirements for all livestock classes. Pastures are at their weakest and environmental conditions are the coldest of the year. Usually water intake reduces in cold weather. It is essential to keep water troughs clean, fresh and if feasable control the water temperature.
Cold weather requires greater energy intake for all livestock to maintain bodyweight. Provide animals witha a ration top-dress that increases protien, energy and fortification. Wendland's recommends Champion Supplement Pellets during this time of the year.
